2018 VBS Report

2018 VBS Report – God Is With Us!

Smiles, laughter, enthusiasm, energy, love, and caring — these are what I observed during the 2018 Vacation Bible School at Hillsboro UMC!  It was a wonderful week for everyone involved – 45 children, 20 teen leaders, 41 adult volunteers, and lots of parents!   A sincere “thank you” goes to everyone…for it really was a church family effort.

The setting was Babylon during the time of Daniel.  Using the first six books of Daniel, we learned about his strong faith and the courage he showed as he stood up to several Babylonian kings.  Karl Kendrick was a wonderful Daniel and Pastor Betty played a very spirited Ashpenaz!  We learned that “God is always with us”—when things change, when we are afraid, when we are lonely, and when we are thankful. Kevin Keenan was “Babylon Bill” who kept the story going…and Millie Grasso was “Babylon Beth” who led our music.

The children were encouraged to share “God Sightings” each day — be sure to read some of their responses on the back wall opposite the kitchen.  Then look on the opposite wall at all the smiling faces. Thanks to Bill Jorgensen and Kristen Reed for beautiful photographs.

Many new children from the community joined us for the week…Kudos to Jodi Wolfe for recruiting the most participants!  All the children in grades 1-5 are invited to extend their VBS experience by attending “HUMC Junior Youth” each Wednesday from 6:00-7:30 pm.  and all youth in grades 6-12 are invited to attend “HUMC Senior Youth” on Sundays from 5:00-7:00 pm. Our youth director Kevin Keenan does an excellent job sharing God’s love with our young people. He is always looking for adults to attend with him or to provide a snack supper. If you can help, let him know.

I truly felt God working in our church family and community during our VBS —thank you for making it possible and a big success!

With much appreciation,  Cherry Lane Darken, VBS Co-Director
